Making a Referral

  • Clients may be referred by another agency or person or they may contact CJCs themselves after hearing about the service.
  • If a client consents, an agency can provide information about the parties and the disputing issues to CJCs.

Agencies can make a referral by completing the appropriate Referral Form below and sending it to CJCs.

Referral Form - General
Referral Form - Department of Housing
Referral Form - Local Courts
Referral Form - Children's Court

Hints for making referrals

Mediation is voluntary and parties will need to be encouraged and reassured if they are to take up the offer. Informed choice is important. Explain the options available, and the possible consequences of those options. Explain the advantages of mediation.

There is usually an initial reluctance to use mediation. Meeting with the other party is not necessarily an attractive idea. Many people need to hear the suggestion from several different sources before they take it up. Sometimes a problem has to get more “serious” before people are prepared to negotiate. An initial reaction of mediation can become an acceptance later on if people feel they have not ‘lost face’.
